A Certification for BPO Managers for the First Time in Sri Lanka

Lanka BPO Academy, Sri Lanka’s first dedicated-to-BPO training institution today announced that it is organizing a training program to certify Managers and Supervisors at BPO and related organizations in Sri Lanka. This is the first time that Sri Lanka gets this opportunity.

Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) is about carrying out business activities for international organizations from Sri Lanka where Sri Lanka gains foreign exchange as well as create thousands of well paying professional jobs. Additionally, large conglomerates have outsourced work to its own specialized captive subsidiaries that act like BPOs.

Lanka BPO Academy is offering a Certification for Managers and Supervisors at BPOs, Customer Service Organizations and Call Centers regardless of their specialization for the first time in Sri Lankan history. The certification body offering the certification is BPO Certifications Institute (BCI). BCI (www.bpocertifications.com) is world’s largest competency certification company in the BPO domain offering certification for BPO professionals and research/advisory services to the global outsourcing industry. BCI certifications are offered in 40+ countries.
The CEO of Lanka BPO Academy Yasas Vishuddhi Abeywickrama said that the certification training program will be held in early May this year. He also explained that BPO Professionals so far did not have proper ongoing professional development and this program offered for those who hold supervisory roles at such organsaitions is going to solve that problem for ever and benefit both the professional and industry. Lanka BPO Academy Managing Partner Dharshana Illamperuma also participated at the announcement of the program.

Sri Lanka remains well placed to win a big share of the BPO business, with their biggest regional competitors being China, India and Philippines. Building a skilled workforce benefits a country’s economy by expanding its pool of potential recruits especially when it comes to an industry such as the BPO industry, where Sri Lanka is ranked among the Top 30 emerging destinations for outsourcing in 2010.

Our vision is to see a prosperous and happy Sri Lanka, where children have access to education, health care and the love and support of a family that is financially sound.
With the end of the decades long civil war, this ‘pearl of the Indian ocean’ is turning over a new leaf, Sri Lankans are optimistic in starting a new life and helping each other stand up on their own feet again. Despite their resilience and hopes they can’t do it alone, they need support to get through the hard times.

The organisation expects to attract donations from countries around the world and utilize them for the benefit of needy Sri Lankans. Donations from Sri Lankans are also welcome.

YASASA FOUNDATION is the noble idea of its founders Yasas Vishuddhi Abeywickrama and Sasani Abeywickrama. The endeavour is well supported by many others including family, friends and well wishers. I am in the process of digesting this news and coming to believe myself that I have won this....well it is true and it is quite touching...It is the news that I have won the 2009 Young Professional of the Year Award!!

Professions Australia has awarded both "Professional of the Year" and "Young Professional of the Year" to ACS Members this year and it is a great win for the ICT industry among all the industries. Professions Australia represents many industries and I believe the competition was very high. So, whilst it's a personal win for me, it's a win for the ACS as well as the ICT industry.

I think this is the first time that the ICT industry won the Professional of the Year Award, which was won by Phillip Argy this year. Phillip is the immediate Past President of the ACS. However, the ACS has had quite a good run in the past in the Young Professional of the Year Award category. In 2005 Debbie Timmins won the award, in 2006 Ana Govan won it and in 2007 Yohan Ramasundara was highly commended. I must say that I am glad to be recognised at the level that these individuals were recognised because I considered them as role models and was inspired by them to do what I am doing today.

Anyway, this award has further encouraged me to do more things for the industry, always thinking outside the box and believing in myself.

I was in Kuala Lampur, Malaysia in the first week of March for official purposes and I must say I enjoyed it so much. KL is such a modern city and for an Asian country, its a big achievement. I had the chance to walk around in the streets of KL and also experience the food and culture. After KL, I also visited Colombo for a couple of days.

Mentoring Work Continues...

It's been awhile since started to provide career counselling and mentoring services on a voluntary basis. I have put this offer forward in a couple of forums and also my profile in most websites carry the fact. So, I get requests every now and then. Sometimes its a lot to handle, but I respond to and work with those who want my help amidst time pressures. I'll continue this work this year as well. I just wanted to quickly sign in to make a quick note to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!

Thanks for visiting this blog in 2008, I hope it was useful to all who came here and hope you return back in 2009 as well.

The year end is always busy with things to be completed & cleaned up. Of course, you also need to take a break to revitalise yourself to face the new year. So, it has been like that for me as well, hence why you didn't see a post for awhile.

I really look forward to the new year, a new year always brings new hopes and new challenges! Apart from work, my role at ACS has further expanded. For 2009, I have a National role to play as the Board Director of the National Young IT Board (Link). I have also been re-elected as a member of the Victorian Branch, which is going to be a continuation from where I left in 2008.

I had the opportunity of doing a talk at an orientation day presentation this week for the third time this year at the Melbourne Institute of Technology (MIT) to address new students.

MIT, the Melbourne Institute of Technology, is a modern, innovative and dynamic institution which provides high-quality education relevant to the ever-changing demands of the workforce. It also provides a firm base for students who want to pursue higher education in Business and Information Technology. MIT also has a high concentration of international students and it was great to have the opportunity to address those new students.

I wish to thank Dr. Elizabeth A. Kendall, Dr. Savitri Bevinakoppa and Anna Bordignon of MIT for their assistance in organizing these presentations and look forward to doing more in this space.

This probably is going to be the first of a series of Blogs/Notes that I would make in retrospect to summarise how last year was spent. Well, there are almost 2 months more to go in this year, but with a December vacation coming and planning for next year already started, I have started to wind down the year already!!

It's been a busy year with work, trainings, travel, writing and industry activities. This post is about some of the industry activities that we did over the last year. I am a true believer of the saying ‘Actions Speak Louder Than Words’ and I think the base for any Change starts with Actions. Those Actions need to be based on solid objectives and principles if you want to attract support from others for the cause. However, it’s important to translate Actions into Words as well, so that whoever didn’t see the actual Actions get the message.

ACS Victorian Young IT events are getting popular day by day. Last week, we had a Young IT in the Pub – Trivia Night, which became a true success and was so much fun. The questions were from a range of areas and they were fairly difficult which made groups really discuss among themselves before answering. I think that was great for networking, so that people talk to each other and get to know each other better. Amazing Careers Night

We had a very successful ACS event in Melbourne organized by the Young IT group. The unparalleled quality of the night created so much value for the attendees.

Representatives from companies (Hays, IBM, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Accenture, NAB and Object Consulting ) explained the things they look for when hiring a potential candidate, opportunities available for students, graduates and young professionals, Graduate Hiring Programs and tips on how candidates can be successful in securing the job they want.

In addition to the above industry leading companies, the participants also had the honour of listening to the chief guest Ian Dennis, Chair ACS Victorian Board. They also had the opportunity of meeting up with Yohan Ramasundara, Director Young IT professionals Board. The company presentations were followed with a panel discussion which allowed the audience to ask questions as well as have a discussion on their concerns. The lively networking event at the end was used by young professionals to clarify their questions and also to build essential relationships with each other as well as representatives of participating leading companies.

The event was a great success with well over 225 people attending in a house full event.

Vicious Cycles….

The other day, I was talking to a taxi driver while on a fairly long tour. The chat started in the usual manner, like ‘How’s your day been so far?’, but the chat didn’t end in the usual way. Once the driver got to know that I do IT related work, he told me about his case, where he got a Bachelors Degree in IT from his home country and then a Management related Masters from Australia but still finding it hard to get a relevant job and driving taxis for a long time. I know that this is not a rare case, but the time he’s spent like this sounded way too long. He is ok for any job related to IT, even though his Masters is in something else. Anyway, I felt sorry for the guy as he pleaded to help him, so I told him that if he sends me the CV, I would see what I can do, at a minimum, I thought I would review his CV to give him some feedback so that he could attract some employers. I gave him my contact and mentioned opportunities where he can meet other people as well, which obviously helps in networking and eventually in employment prospects. He was over the moon, and sounded very enthusiastic and even offered to wait for my return trip after I finish my work at the destination, which he did, making it an extra long chat. He said he is going to send me the CV soon after he finishes his shift, like that very afternoon, the first thing after that shift, basically!

To this date, I have not received it. He didn’t pursue his own plea! This just shows the lack ok persistence and also not using opportunities presented to some people. Such people know that they need help, but don’t know how to get it. At the same time, they understand that they need to break the vicious cycle by trying hard, but don’t do the hard work to break it by trying out different things, they just live in that cycle complaining about various things for their fate. I hope such people be more courageous and persistence in achieving their dreams, so that they don’t limit them to just dreams but make them realities.

A Young IT in the Pub Event with an Entrepreneurial Flavour!

This week, we had yet another successful Young IT in the Pub event with a senior professional participating to further enrich the event. We met other ICT colleagues, which helps to keep our existing network going while further extending it as well by meeting new people. It is always great fun to talk to people to get to know how things are going with them, their career progression, issues, achievements and also to see different perspectives on various things.

Dr Anthony Overmass was our guest senior professional this time, he did a great talk to our Young IT members. Anthony is a unique entrepreneur, thinks and executes things in his own way. I am happy that we were able to have a speaker who thinks out of the box who actually delivered a talk with a difference as well. It was mainly around how he was able to succeed as an ICT businessman outlining the way he managed to keep the innovation going whilst managing the business, risks and opportunities. Everyone enjoyed it, and also appreciated the opportunity they got to talk to such a senior high achiever face to face in a relaxed environment.

ACS Professional Year (PYear) Program

I thought I should blog about the new Professional Year Program that is being offered by the Australian Computer Society. This is a fantastic practical job readiness course, and the only one of its nature.

The background is that, the Australian government has introduced some changes to the student visas and also to permanent resident (PR) visa for those who have studied in Australia under student visas. In this new scheme, one way to earn some additional points (10) is to do the Professional Year Program with the organization that’s been selected by the Immigration Department for their respective professional stream. The Australian Computer Society being the professional society for ICT professionals, the minister has gazzetted ACS as the PYear program provider for ICT students.

Apart from the formal importance of it from a visa and industry standard perspective, I am excited about it due to the course content and the objectives. It’s a job readiness program, something that universities have continued to fail to deliver. Shifting from the university to the work force is something that we need to work on as this shift means jumping over a huge gap for the vast majority.

The PYear Program is delivered between a minimum of 44 weeks and a maximum 12 months and includes the following elements;
Opening Bootcamp
Australian Workplace Culture
Professional and Business Communications Skills
Internship
Professional Element, and
Closing Bootcamp

ACS engages partnering educational institutes as accredited providers to conduct the program. As of now Monash, Swinburne and Brisbane North Institute of TAFE & Internships Australia have come on board as partners.

The course audience is actually a sub set within the Young IT target group, and some of the skills that we try to facilitate through our programs are similar, because one of our main objectives has been to help graduates in a smooth swift to the industry by helping them out with the key skills required.

The program was launched in Melbourne on May 26th and I had the opportunity to speak at the opening bootcamp. I spoke to them about the important role that ACS could play in their careers as well as how they should practically get involved for the benefit of both their own selves and the industry. The second group starts on the 30th of June, and I have been invited again to speak to them on the opening day. I am looking forward to getting them on board on Young IT activities by making them aware of the great things that we do!

The Spectacular Adelaide Experience!

I am back in Melbourne after the ACS Young IT International Conference and the Young IT Board meeting which followed after the conference. The time in Adelaide was nothing but spectacular. Conference went so well, and the quality of it was unparallel, I am really proud to be a part of a community that is capable of delivering something of that calibre. The associated fun activities were also great. So many people from around Australia and overseas turned up making it a memorable networking and learning opportunity. I feel so good of going through it and also feel sad about those who couldn’t make to a such a great event. Think and plan better for the next one in Sydney, that’s my advice to all young ICT professionals who couldn’t make themselves available in Adelaide this time round. My blog sure will have information on the next year’s conference as well, stay tuned!

Talking of people I met, I feel proud and happy that I met each one of them. The chats I had with from senior professionals, ACS National Board members including the President himself to students were so amazing and memorable. I enjoyed every minute of it and learnt so much. The crew that went down there from Melbourne was cool too. Thanks guys for making me special on that dinner night! :)

Debbie Timmins was so great as the chair and as I have mentioned previously as well in my blog, she is an inspiration to young professionals. The core organizers including Yohan Ramasundara, Cindy Tong, Seni Murni and Tapan Dave did a marvoulous job. Yohan is always a treat to work with. I thought Kumar's talk was exceptional and had some honest advice and different opinions on how to be on top. It definitely was not the usual career guidance you would hear. We are extremely pleased to be able to create such an opportunity for Young IT professionals.

I want to sincerely thank my team of YIT, who did a great job in organizing and promoting this event. Passing that mark of 100 is a great achievement on its own. As Kumar himself said in his talk, it was the team effort and not mine!

Around the World in 14 Days!

I am back in Australia now after an around the world trip of 14 days.

Yes, it truly was around the world. I started from Melbourne and first went to Los Angeles over the pacific ocean. I traveled around LA, covered Hollywood and Beverly Hills, then headed off to Chicago, where I stayed for a week on a company training. Mahasen came to see me there, and we went all around the Chicago city. From Chicago, I came to Frankfurt, Germany over the Atlantic Ocean and then to Bangkok, finally ending up in Colombo, Sr Lanka, my home country. The purpose of the visit there was to see my parents. I met few close relatives and friends too, but missed most, please bare with me about that, I had just a few days. From Colombo, I came back to Melbourne via Bangkok.

It was a good trip, best thing was being able to see my family back home.

Mark Hennessy is Vice President and Chief Information Officer of IBM with responsibility for leading technology operations and strategic business initiatives to enable innovation and growth for IBM. He was appointed to this role in July 2007.
In his tenure at IBM, Mark has held a diverse series of sales, marketing and general management assignments. Prior to his current assignment, he was General Manager, Global Distribution Sector, where he was responsible for IBM's sales, strategy, marketing, and solutions for the retail, consumer packaged goods, travel and transportation industries. This set of clients represents approximately 10% of IBM's revenue around the world.

From 2001 to 2004 he was Vice President, Distribution Channels Management, primarily responsible for optimizing all of IBM's go-to-market resources and spending worldwide. In 1999, he became Vice President, Systems Sales, Asia Pacific, based in Tokyo. In this assignment, he was responsible for the sale of IBM's servers, storage, networking and printer products throughout twenty-two countries in Asia.

Mark joined IBM in 1981 as a client representative. He held various management posts with increasing responsibility until 1996 when he was promoted to Vice President, Midwestern Area Operations, which included strategic marketing programs, customer satisfaction and quality process direction for IBM's operations in ten midwestern states.

A graduate of Boston College, Mark earned a BA in economics in 1980. In 1990, he earned an MBA from the University of Chicago, Graduate School of Business.

Well, now I've opened up another blog other than my own blog here. The new one is a corporate blog in the Accenture external website, which has been added to the list of blogs maintain by the company.

This one is the 'Experienced Consultants Blog' There are five guys posting in this blog, including me. I published my first post there last week. Being a corporate blog, it's slightly different from having your own blog, needs to go through some review and approval process, and writing has to be generally related to work, well, technically, can write anything, but the appropriateness for the blog and the website needs to be thought about before inking (or typing!)

The Short Long Weekend

This Monday is a public holiday, so it's a long weekend, however, we had a release over the weekend. So had to work on Saturday (Originally planned for just 3 hrs, which eventually took 6 hours!) and Sunday (the whole day) as well. Effectively, it's a short long weekend for me. Monday is the real rest day for me...thank god monday was declared a holiday to mark Australia day which actually fell onto last Saturday!

ACS Work Continues....Looking for Young Blood!

As a person who is keen on being involved in IT industry voluntary professional activities, I have been in touch with the Australian Computer Society (ACS) for a reasonable time now and held some responsibilities before too, including being a member of the South Australian Executive Committee as well as a member of the National Member Lifecycle Board (2006/2007).

Now, I have an opportunity to continue my service and involvement as I was recently co-opted to the Executive Committee of the Victorian Branch of the ACS and became the new Victorian representative in the ACS National Young IT Board.

In my national role, I will be participating in ACS national strategies for young IT professionals and activities whilst in my Victorian role, I am responsible to implement them in Victoria state. My work mostly relates to young IT professionals, new graduates and IT student community. Some examples of the activities that we would be doing are organizing speaker sessions, providing networking opportunities and providing hands on experiences for students such as mock interviews.

I am exited about this challenging opportunity and I have already got started with the job at hand. As always, planning phase comes first.

I am in the process of forming my team for 2008 Young IT committee for Victoria as well as recruiting some good student ambassadors from each university in Victoria. If you are interested in getting involved, please get in touch with me. If you know of someone who would be effective in such a role, please send in your recommendations. I am keen to create some great opportunities for willing, capable and young individuals. It’s a great way for young professionals to build their network and improve professionalism whilst serving the IT community, especially the younger demographic.

Fifteen new factory units are to be established by the Tea Shakthi Fund (TSF) under its development plan for next year.

The fund also expects to earn a profit of Rs. 112 million next year from factory operations. It is expected to earn Rs. 1,316 million from 5,300 metric tonnes of made tea, to make a profit of Rs. 25 million from fertiliser and Rs. 0.57 million from local tea sales.

According to the Ministry of Plantation Industries Secretary J. Abeywickrama, the TSF has made a positive progress in 2007 by making a profit of Rs. 48 million on factory operations and made an overall profit of Rs. 63.4 million.

TSF is an organisation financed and owned by tea smallholders with the objective of harnessing the full potential of a large community of enterprising small tea cultivators. It operates in a network made of a 1,200-strong tea smallholders’ societies covering a tea growing population of 1.5 million.

Today is the last working day before the Christmas and New Year Holidays. We start work again on 2nd January, so its a fairly long holiday period of 11 days in a raw. Hoping to do a lot of travelling here, around Melbourne and a week in Sydney as well. Sasani's parents are here for the vacation, so it's going to be a good vacation. It's about a week since they arrived here and whilst I was working this week, Sasani has been taking them in and around Melbourne. From tomorrow, I will be joining the party.

Prof. Munasinghe first Sri Lankan to win Nobel honours

Every year since 1901 the Nobel Prize has been awarded for achievements in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and for peace.

The Nobel Prize is an international award administered by the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1968, Sveriges Riksbank established The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Prize. Each prize consists of a medal, personal diploma, and a cash award.

Professor Munasinghe is the first Sri Lankan to receive this coveted award, and shares the Prize along with other members of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
As Vice Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Professor Mohan Munasinghe shares the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with other IPCC colleagues and Al Gore, for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change.

The IPCC is a UN "Think Tank" consisting of the world's leading experts on climate change. It was created by the World Metorological Organisation (WMO) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) over 20 years ago. Professor Munasinghe has contributed to all four of the authoritative assessments on climate change produced by the IPCC in 1990, 1995, 2001 and 2007.

In its recently released report, the IPCC states that global warming is unequivocal and very likely caused by human activities that have steadily increased atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases (especially carbon dioxide) since the industrial revolution. Among the alarming outcomes are increased global average temperatures (around 3°C by 2100), sea level rise (about 0.4 metres by 2100), more severe droughts and floods, and increases in extreme weather events like cyclones and storms. Ironically, while greenhouse gas emissions from rich countries have contributed most to global warming, the poor countries will be hardest hit, and poor groups will be the most vulnerable. Thus, climate change will significantly worsen existing problems like poverty, hunger and disease.

More generally, unchecked climate changes will alter and threaten the living conditions of the over 6 billion inhabitants of the planet, who are all stakeholders.

Through the scientific reports it has issued over the past two decades, the dedicated scientists in the IPCC have created an ever-broader informed consensus about the connection between human activities and global warming. Whereas in the 1980s global warming seemed to be merely an interesting hypothesis, the 1990s produced firmer evidence in its support. In the last few years, the connections have become even clearer and the dire consequences still more apparent.

Professor Munasinghe has been in the forefront of the IPCC efforts recognized by the Nobel Prize award, to integrate climate change policies into development strategy, and thereby make development more sustainable. He proposed the Sustainomic Framework at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, to practically achieve this goal, based on the sustainable development triangle (with social, economic and environmental dimensions). The methodology has been widely applied worldwide to jointly address climate change and sustainable development, the two pre-eminent issues of the 21st century.

Professor Munasinghe is also Chairman of the Munasinghe Institute for Development (MIND), which has contributed to the work of the IPCC. MIND is a non-profit body which provides scholarships to Sri Lankan students and conducts research and training work worldwide on climate change and sustainable development. By awarding the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 to the IPCC Team and Al Gore, the Nobel Prize Committee is seeking to contribute to a sharper focus on the processes and decisions that appear to be necessary to protect the world's future climate, and thereby to reduce the threat to the security of humankind. Prompt action by world leaders and all concerned stakeholders is necessary now, before climate change moves beyond human control. Professor Munasinghe has served his motherland in a number of capacities as a scientist and researcher.

First Year Anniversary of Blogging

Today marks the first year anniversary for my blog. It’s been an interesting thing to do really, even though I had extended periods of not blogging due to other priorities. However, I have managed to keep it going at a pretty consistent rate. I have enjoyed it and hope to continue as well.

Sri Lanka’s Test Win Against England is a true tribute to Sanath and Murali.

Its nice to see Sanath retiring on a winning note, whilst having fully contributed to the win. His last test innings is a snapshot of what he portrayed in the cricket scene for almost 20 years, the aggressive positiveness. His six fours in a single over reminds how he devastated so many bowlers and teams over the years, in both one day and test formats. We are lucky to see him for a little while in one-day matches. Whilst his test performances including the 300+ score against India would be never forgotten, his role in revolutionising the one-day game (together with Kalu) in 1996 is a major milestone in the history of cricket.

Murali, undoubtedly the best ever bowler in cricket passed the world record for highest number of test wickets by any bowler in this winning match, at his hometown, Kandy, Sri Lanka. His achievement is a gift not only for his great talent, but also for his courage, fighting against the baseless forces that wanted him out of the scene. However, on and off the field, he won his battles as a true hero with no other bowler coming even close to his performances and records.

Murali is the ultimate legend of the game of cricket.

I have just completed reading the book “50 Great e-Businesses and the minds behind them” by Emily Ross and Angus Holland. The book uses informative case studies to explore the great idea, how the business started, the business models and what made them different from the crowd.

This book features 50 stories of successful Internet businesses and the people behind them, including successful Australian e-businesses such as Wotif.com, CarSales.com.au, Seek, RealEstate.com.au, Crickey and AussieBum.

It also investigates big names like Facebook, MySpace, Skype, YouTube, Google, Paypal, eBay and Amazon. It hasn’t forgotten blogging sites such as PerezHilton, Treehugger, Blogger and Twitter and also includes some interesting success stories like Pandora, Digg and Flickr.

It’s amazing to read some of the stories where the inventor even in his wildest dreams didn’t imagine that his idea would be this successful, for instance eBay, Facebook etc. However, the uniqueness and the greatness of the idea meant that users started to flood into their sites within a very short period of time. However, on the other end of the spectrum, sites like RealEstate.com.au have gone through serious tough times before it really started to tick. In the case of sites like RealEstate.com.au, Seek and NYCGarages, the challenge has been engaging the tech-phobic industry with this new idea of e-business.

I am happy to categorise this book as one of the best books I have ever read.

Australia Set to Say 'Sorry' to the Aboriginals

New Australian Government led by Kevin Rudd is set to say 'Sorry' to the native Australians, aboriginals.

Even though its just a matter of saying a single word, this has been debated for a long time. Out going Prime Minister Howard was in the opinion that there is no reason for the current generation to say 'Sorry' for wrong doings by their previous generations. At that stage, it looked like his entire party was behind him, however, soon after the election defeat, several cats jumped out of the bag. Several leaders openly said that its required to say 'Sorry'.

However, the new PM or his party was never in doubt.

As I gather, this is not going to do a major 'tangible' difference, however, its a welcome gesture, a gesture that closes the gap between aboriginals and non-aboriginals.

Following web report from news.com.au gives the current background on this new initiative from the new government:

APOLOGISING to Aboriginal people for past injustices would not open the door to compensation claims, Prime Minister-elect Kevin Rudd said today.

Mr Rudd has promised to apologise on behalf of the Government to indigenous people, including the stolen generations who were taken from their families.

Asked if that might lead to compensation claims, Mr Rudd told Southern Cross Broadcasting: "Not at all".

"I believe that the only appropriate thing that we've got to get right is the exact language of the apology," he said.

"The purpose of saying sorry is to build a bridge, establish respect so we can move on with the practical business of closing the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous life expectancy and other challenges facing indigenous communities."

Mr Rudd has not yet said whether the apology would include the word "sorry".

He has promised to consult indigenous groups on the precise wording.

Kevin Rudd to be Australia's next PM

KEVIN Rudd’s Labor has swept aside 11 years of Coalition rule, destroying John Howard’s hopes for a record fifth term and consigning him to a humiliating exit from public life. Voters turned to Mr Rudd’s pitch of fresh leadership and new ideas over Mr Howard’s record of economic management and unprecedented years of growth under his government.

"I will be a prime minister for all Australians. It's time for a new page to be written in our nation's history."

He restated education, health, climate change and water, broadband infrastructure and a fair balance at work as his key tasks.

By 10.15pm John Howard had called the Labor leader to concede defeat as his own seat of Bennelong remained on a knife-edge.

The Prime Minister said he took full responsibility for the defeat and admitted he could well lose the seat of Bennelong he has held since first being elected to Parliament in 1974.

By 9.30pm Greens leader Bob Brown welcomed Mr Rudd as the new prime minister of Australia.

The Coalition campaign was dogged in its final days by scandal in the marginal New South Wales seat of Lindsay, with the Prime Minister left haplessly condemning an electoral stunt from his party involving fake Muslim pamphlets.

In his last pleas Mr Howard told the people if they changed government they would change the country. Voters seem to have taken him on his word, punishing him at the polls after unpopular reforms including Work Choices and six straight interest rate rises since winning the 2004 election with the promise of keeping them low.

The Cup Day

Today is the Cup Day...the Melbourne Cup day. A significant event in the Australian sporting calendar every year. Horse racing has a special place in Australia and the Melbourne cup is the most important one among a many a horsing events. Its known as the "race that stops the nation" where everything halts for a couple of minutes. The public holiday in Victoria for the cup is the best thing for me though :)

No E-mails Day?

Saw a couple of articles here in Australia and also on web about 'No e-mail days'.

Intel joins many other companies that has announced a weekly no-emails day for some engineers.

If you read the above article, you would see how some research work proved that too much emails are lessening workplace productivity.

However, I think this depends on the area of work for each employee. In the context of IT industry, technical resources need not use extensive amounts of emails, but there are other areas of work where emails are hard to avoid. It depends on circumstances as well, sometimes, emails serve the purpose of official approval/documentation, which would be much quicker than producing a document.

If a phone call or just a casual face-to-face chat is quicker and good enough, no reason to waist time on an email.

Another side of this is to have only the relevant people on email recipients lists. Copying irrelevant people just wastes valuable time of those people.

So, it's all about judging and choosing the best communication method for the purpose.

These days, I am having a really busy time at work and receive about 100 emails a day and send over 50 on most days! In hindsight, its near impossible do without sending and receiving that much....this is after using the phone and direct communication as much as possible...it's just the way it is...

One of my batchmates, Wyomi Ranasinghe has been selected as one of the
finalists in the Fashion Designer of the Year competition in Sri Lanka.
